hypothesis is an evolving exhibition series that explores sociocultural themes within contemporary art practice: a platform for artistic hypotheses. Paraphrasing Theodor W. Adorno’s thesis that art is the social antithesis of society, art here becomes the starting point for social questions and is understood as a form of thinking.

With hypothesis, we aim to create a different form of public space for art, in which the thesis comes before the market. The exhibitions do not begin with the question Who is the artist? but with the question What hypothesis about our present does this work propose?

Contemporary art has the ability to perceive social developments earlier, more idiosyncratically, and more unexpectedly than many other disciplines. Artists generally do not provide answers, but rather pose questions that make our present visible. We want to open spaces for thought that invite discussion.

hypothesis brings art into dialogue with science, architecture, philosophy, history, and the experiences of everyday life. Around each exhibition, conversations, texts, and encounters emerge that extend the discourse.

hypothesis has no permanent location. The exhibitions take place wherever their content makes sense. Each space becomes, for a brief period, a temporary starting point for a new conversation.

hypothesis ist eine sich fortschreibende Ausstellungsreihe, die sich mit soziokulturellen Themen innerhalb zeitgenössischer Kunstpraxis auseinandersetzt: eine Plattform für künstlerische Hypothesen. Theodor W. Adornos These paraphrasierend, Kunst sei die gesellschaftliche Antithese zur Gesellschaft, wird die Kunst hier zum Ausgangspunkt gesellschaftlicher Fragen und versteht sich als Form des Denkens.

Mit hypothesis möchten wir eine andere Form von Öffentlichkeit für Kunst schaffen, in der die These vor dem Markt steht. Die Ausstellungen beginnen nicht mit der Frage Wer ist die Künstlerin oder der Künstler? sondern mit der Frage Welche Hypothese über unsere Gegenwart stellt diese Arbeit auf?

Zeitgenössische Kunst besitzt die Fähigkeit, gesellschaftliche Entwicklungen früher, eigensinniger und überraschender wahrzunehmen als viele andere Disziplinen. Künstler formulieren gemeinhin keine Antworten, sondern stellen Fragen, die unsere Gegenwart sichtbar machen. Wir möchten Denkräume eröffnen, die zur Diskussion einladen.

hypothesis bringt Kunst in den Dialog mit Wissenschaft, Architektur, Philosophie, Geschichte und den Erfahrungen des Alltags. Rund um jede Ausstellung entstehen Gespräche, Texte und Begegnungen, die den Diskurs erweitern.

hypothesis besitzt keinen festen Ort. Die Ausstellungen entstehen dort, wo sie inhaltlich sinnvoll sind. Jeder Raum wird für kurze Zeit zum Ausgangspunkt eines neuen Gespräches.
